About

Twenty years of roofs taught us the range was named after the wrong thing.

Depth is a consequence. What a specifier is actually held to is a number in a report: litres retained, species established, kilograms per square metre, kilowatt-hours produced. In 2026 we renamed every system after the outcome it is engineered to deliver, and moved the technical library behind a login so we know which drawing set is in whose hands.

The name

A meristem is the tissue a plant grows from.

It is the small, unglamorous layer where everything above it originates. That is what an assembly is to a roof, and it is what the mark draws: three layers and a shoot breaking the top line.

Verdura described a colour. Meristem describes a function, which is the shift the whole business made.

  1. 2006Verdura Roof Products founded in Burlington, Ontario. Two extensive assemblies.
  2. 2011First modular tray line. The catalogue starts being named by depth.
  3. 2017Monitoring programme begins — twenty-four roofs instrumented for retention.
  4. 2023Detention cells and flow control added; stormwater work outgrows the naming.
  5. 2026Rebrand to Meristem. The range is renamed by outcome, and the document library moves behind a login.

Manufacturing

Media blended and mats grown in Burlington, Ontario. Modules ship planted, not seeded.

Installed by others

We do not install. Assemblies are placed by approved roofing and landscape contractors, trained and re-certified every two years.

Held to numbers

Twenty-four instrumented roofs feed the retention figures published on this site. The raw data is in the portal.
